Somewhere under the boxes, broken chairs, and mystery bins, there is a garage. Maybe even room for a car. Here is the plan that actually works for clearing years of buildup in a single weekend, plus the shortcut when you would rather skip the weekend entirely.
Before you start: the two rules
Rule one: everything comes out. Sorting in place does not work. Clutter hides behind clutter, and you end up shuffling piles. Pick a dry morning, open the door, and empty the garage onto the driveway.
Rule two: every item gets one decision, immediately. No "decide later" pile. That pile is how the garage got this way.
The four-pile method
As things come out, they land in one of exactly four zones:
- Keep. It works, you use it, it has a home. Be honest: "might need it someday" is how you got here.
- Donate or sell. Working items someone else would actually want. Tools, bikes, kitchen gear, clothes.
- Trash. Broken, expired, rusted, or missing pieces. This pile is always bigger than people expect.
- Hazardous. Paint, chemicals, batteries, propane, motor oil. These cannot go in the trash pile. See below.
Move fast. Ten seconds per item. The first hour is slow and the last hour is ruthless, and that is normal.
What to do with the hazardous pile
California does not allow paint, chemicals, batteries, fluorescent tubes, or motor oil in regular trash. Orange County operates household hazardous waste collection centers where residents can drop these off free. Search "Orange County household hazardous waste" for the current locations and hours. It is one errand, and then it is done forever.
Electronics count as e-waste, but those we can take: TVs, monitors, and old electronics ride along on any junk removal pickup.
Putting the keepers back
Only the keep pile returns, and it goes back with intention: shelves for bins, hooks for tools, everything visible. If the keep pile does not fit the garage with room to spare, make another pass. The garage's job is to hold what you use, not what you own.
The shortcut: have a crew do the heavy part
