Old hot tubs have a way of overstaying their welcome. The heater dies, the shell fades, and suddenly you have a 700-pound planter box taking up the best corner of the yard. Here is exactly what it takes to remove one, and why it is almost never a DIY job.
Why hot tubs are harder to remove than they look
An empty hot tub still weighs 500 to 1,000 pounds, and it is an awkward, rigid shape that does not fit through gates, around corners, or past pool equipment. Most Orange County backyards were landscaped after the tub went in, which means the easy path it arrived on no longer exists.
That is why professional crews do not carry hot tubs out. We cut them up.
The removal process, step by step
- Disconnect. Power to the tub is shut off and the electrical connection is safely disconnected. Water and gas lines, if any, are capped.
- Drain. Any remaining water is pumped out.
- Cut. The shell and frame are cut into manageable sections with power saws. It is loud for about an hour, and we protect the surrounding deck and landscaping while we work.
- Haul. Every piece, including the equipment pack, cover, and steps, is loaded and hauled away. Metal components get recycled.
- Clean up. We sweep the pad and leave a clean, level footprint, ready for whatever comes next.
Most above-ground hot tub removals are done in a couple of hours, start to finish.
What about in-ground spas?
In-ground spas are a true demolition project: breaking up the shell, removing the plumbing and equipment, and hauling out the concrete and debris. It is a bigger job than an above-ground tub, but it is one our demolition crew handles regularly, and it is the only way to fully reclaim that part of the yard.
What does hot tub removal cost?
Price depends on three things: the size of the tub, how hard it is to reach, and whether it is above-ground or in-ground. A standard backyard tub with decent access is a routine job. A tub wedged behind a narrow side gate on a Laguna Niguel hillside takes more cutting and more trips to the truck, so it costs a bit more.

Can I remove a hot tub myself?
Technically, yes. Realistically, you would need a reciprocating saw, several strong friends, a truck, a plan for the electrical disconnect, and a dump that accepts the debris. Most people who start this project call us halfway through. There is no judgment, we just finish the job.
